Can I buy live ants in Canada?
Yes. We sell live queen ants and young founding colonies exclusively within Canada. Due to the natural life cycle of our native ants, which includes a winter hibernation period (diapause) and the complications of shipping during winter, live ants are typically available from April to October. Availability varies by season and we sell out fast!
Do you ship ant farms and ant-keeping equipment to the USA?
Yes. All of our equipment, including formicaria (nests), outworlds (foraging areas), and accessories, can be shipped across Canada and the United States. We offer free shipping on all equipment orders over C$160.
What’s the best ant farm for beginners?
Many new keepers think an “ant farm” means a glass tank filled with sand or gel, but true ant-farming starts with a snug formicarium (nesting chamber) and only later adds an outworld (foraging area).
For a claustral queen—one that seals herself in to lay eggs—a simple test-tube setup with a substrate-filled insert is ideal. The narrow tube holds moisture, and the substrate gives her larvae and cocoons a safe, silk-friendly surface.
Once the first workers emerge, you can attach a small outworld (a foraging area) allowing them to search for food. Semi-claustral queens that need to forage can have a tiny outworld attached.
How do I expand my setup as my colony grows?
Our equipment is designed to be fully modular, allowing your setup to grow slowly with your colony.
The key principle is to expand gradually. You should only offer a new, larger nest when the current space is nearly full, typically when it's about 70-80% occupied by ants and their brood. Connecting a new nest or providing excessive space too early can cause stress issues and hinder development.
Expansion is simple: use vinyl tubing to connect your existing test tube or formicarium to the port of a new, larger one. Using special tubing connectors and adapters for routing can be helpful. Once the colony has fully moved into the new space, you can disconnect the old nest.
